WORD Committee: devotional sharing

Galatians 6:14

"But far be it from me to boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world."

This verse contains the obvious theme of not glorifying yourself, but glorifying God and his grace for you. However, when I read this verse a second time, I got stuck on the last part, which says that "the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world".

By the world being crucified to me, I no longer have to tie myself to the values and rules that our society holds. I don't have to live as a slave to society's definition of success because that definition is now dead to me.

By getting crucified to the world, my values and the reality I now live are so radically different from the world's that they cannot coexist. Thus, I am dead to the world. The thought of being dead to the world seems scary, but it's actually quite freeing. Because I am dead to the world, I'm no longer entangled in the daily struggle to be compatible with the rest of society.
