Monterey Trip // Sophomores Getaway

- Vivian T. -

Midterms, CS projects, and homework! Busy schedules galore! To get away from the chaos, we packed our backpacks and cars to get away for the the weekend at our Monterey house. On the car ride, we stopped to grab dinner together and bonded over sharing stories from the week. As we all trickled into the house and filled the home with laughter and “Hey guys!!! Welcome!!” the kitchen filled with smells of late night snacks.

We gathered together in the living room and guessed each others’ baby pictures (“You were so cute! What happened?”) and played shadow charades.

After we had the hardest time acting out “yule log” (what’s a yule log, anyway?) we played Ghostbusters. The lights went out. Five of us, armed with Nerf guns, stormed the house in pitch black darkness and hunted the rest of our peers hiding behind couches and on the top of the fridge.

The next morning the sisters woke up to the nice smell of tater tots, eggs, porridge, and hot links cooked by the brothers! We got to have a nice meal together in the morning sunlight and after cleanup, went though Psalm 1 together and memorized it.

Blessed is the man
who walks not in the counsel of the wicked,
nor stands in the way of sinners,
nor sits in the seat of scoffers;
but his delight is in the law of the Lord,
and on his law he meditates day and night.
He is like a tree
planted by streams of water
that yields its fruit in its season,
and its leaf does not wither.
In all that he does, he prospers.
The wicked are not so,
but are like chaff that the wind drives away.
Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,
nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous; for the Lord knows the way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked will perish.
— Psalm 1:1-6 (ESV)

While some of us stayed back to study for our upcoming midterms, the rest of us went to Point Lobos to take a hike!

After everyone got back together, we ate dinner as the sun set. We were sad to go, but assembled to clean and take inventory of every nook and cranny of Monterey House. We gathered together for one last picture, and headed back to Berkeley! Thank God for times when we have the privilege to just go on a trip together for a couple of days and bond, dive into Psalm 1, and eat yummy food together.
