Soph-Serve: Angel Tree Volunteering!
In December, we got to participate in Angel Tree, an organization that allows prisoners to send presents to their children through groups of volunteers. The sophs got to participate from wrapping gifts, to spending precious money (one less boba!), to coming to deliver the gifts. Overall, it was a very heartwarming experience. We got to spread out in 3 cars and deliver the gifts to the three families and share the gospel with them, and each family was very thankful to have us.
Jon and Kat got to spend time with a family of three for a short time, talk a bit with them, and then Deborah shared the Christmas story with all of the kids! Jon and Kim Scott got to spend almost 2 hours with a family after we locked our keys in the car (oops) but the mistake became a huge blessing as we got to see the 5 year old girl go from extremely shy to speaking a lot and playing with Vivian and Austin. And the 11 year old girl was so touched by the present from her dad that she started crying after receiving her present. Godwin's car had a good conversation about the gospel! Melissa was able to use the G.O.S.P.E.L acrostic to explain the gospel to the two little boys and their mom in a way that was easy to understand. Then they all got to sing joy to the world together and pray for the family.
Super thankful that we got to participate in serving our community in this way. Each person that came was able to experience the gospel again, as we each saw our hearts break for the families knowing that through all of the brokenness, God sent His only Son to engage with each of them and show them that they still have a Heavenly Parent who loves them completely, even when their earthly parents aren't able to.
