Palace of Fine Arts: Helping a Friend Out

This past Friday, our homegroup combined with Steph and Isaiah’s seniors and enjoyed a chill sunset dinner in the Unit 2 courtyard. After throwing a football around and enjoying Banh Mi sandwiches, we packed the cars and booked it to Palace of Fine Arts in downtown San Francisco. As soon as we saw the palace, it felt like we had just stepped into Renaissance Europe.

When we touched down, we read a small passage from the book of Mark, about four friends who carried their paralytic friend to Jesus for healing. No explanation, no analysis of the text, nothing. Just read it, and like that we were off doing crazy and ridiculous tasks. Everything from building human pyramids to carrying our friends on our shoulders, we definitely disturbed the peace and quiet of the palace with much laughter and joy.

We started to notice that everything we did though, involved relying on the strength and help of others. These were all tasks that were definitely impossible with just one or two people, but took a group coming together and helping out. After we finished embarrassing ourselves on this hallowed piece of architecture, Isaiah gathered our group again and shared a little bit behind why we did all the things we did.

Also, we ran into our sophomore homegroup, so that was a pleasant surprise to see our friends there!

Jesus commended the faith of the friends in the Mark passage, not just the faith of the injured one. Much of Christian life is based on the mutual encouragement and fellowship of friends being together and building each other up with our faith. We’re excited to see all in store for this upcoming year as we do Christian life together as Klesis! See you next time!
